Also, there's much more built-in static analysis and you can run analysis on files modified in a changeset at commit. It can complete a chain (seemingly limited to depth two in my brief test) of method calls that match rvalue type.
INTELLIJ VS ECLIPSE CODE
The code completion seems better than eclipse's. It's quite nice to not have to go digging around. The ctrl+o member search in eclipse doesn't search inherited members, but intelliJ's does. It's slow and buried in menus in eclipse. There's convenient and snappy history searching built right into the top-level UI as well. The native hg in intellij seems to work quite nicely. It's only available through a plugin and it's just wonky. We use mercurial, the support for which in pretty crap in eclipse. There's an option to switch the shortcuts to eclipse's so you don't even much have to bother with relearning shortcuts. So, a stream of consciousness of some things I've noticed in the past few days. I pretty much agree with Wales though I only just started transitioning from eclipse to intellij a few days ago, so I may yet find some things I don't like. Upgrading IDEA is a breeze (it just takes over your configuration, upgrades everything, including plugins and restarts).ĭoes IDEA have its share of problems? Sure, but none of them are structural ones that have been there for 10 years and still haven't been addressed.

INTELLIJ VS ECLIPSE UPDATE
Most of the issues I had with it back then are still there (though it seems to be more stable than back then, thankfully).Įverything about plugins (except writing them possibly, writing an IDEA plugin is not particularly easy due to a woefully under-documented codebase imho) is just better in IDEA: the quality of the plugins, the availability of plugins (no need to muck around with external update sites and all that rot to get basic functionality like Subversion support going) The main problem with Eclipse is that it hasn't made any noticeable improvements over the more than decade since I started programming JVM languages (not just Java) professionally. When I changed companies everyone was using IDEA so I switched and there's no way in hell I'll ever go back unless JetBrains drops the ball really hard (or something new comes along).
